KUGENUMA-Y

The site is near the beachfront in Shonan. The house is a simple composition of a 5-storey 15m high RC Ramen frame with a 6-storey 150m long steel ramp. Initially, the client required only two things: a height of 15m and the ability to climb to that height no matter what. I felt the client's generous way of life and the determination with which he has lived near the sea. We thought it would be appropriate to create a strong, yet light and generous building that embodied this way of life for the client. The 15m long frame is wrapped around a hot-dip galvanised steel ramp. This ramp, which is neither a lift nor a staircase, but a simple slope, will always take you up to the 15m height through the different levels, no matter what. This simple slope can also be seen in many other ways. The extended space it creates on the outside is an upper floor, allowing sweeping windows in all openings and creating a complex connection between inside and outside at the upper level. It is an expanding floor, a shelter from the sun, a railing for safety and a blindfold to block the view from the ground. In addition, for the spaces of different qualities within the frame of five homogenous layers - one or two with high ceilings, three without walls, four like tunnels and five like pavilions - six homogenous layers of slopes gradually shift and intertwine, creating small distortions within the homogenous rules. At the same time, the slope allows the inhabitants to see every corner of the building with their own eyes. Normally, the exterior walls of a 15-metre high building cannot be seen up close, as they deteriorate and shorten the life of the building, but here they are always at eye level and can be checked on a daily basis. When it comes to maintenance work, a tall building requires high scaffolding, which can be costly, but here the ramp becomes the scaffolding. The aim of the project is to create a simple yet complex building where the inhabitants' lives are simultaneously a part of the architecture.
